     About half of the country is Russian.  Before WW2 administration
    was split between Poland and USSR, roughly the split between
    Ukrainian and Russian speakers now.  Ethnically both sets are

    days s various militias rise in the east.  Atrocities have been
    the norm in the past.  I can't see how anyone gains other than

             While reading up on some history I did read that
            Krushchev ceded control of the Crimea to Kiev in 1954,
            Stalin expelled the Tartars killing 45% and that there
            were genocidal starvations.  I sort of knew this stuff,
            but was amazed to discover Sevastopol was the centre of
            massive slaving of Europeans to the Middle East, mostly by

            It looks to me as though the Russians were enticed into
            invading Crimea.  This has crashed the rouble and their
            stockmarket - one wonders who was short on both positions.

            Europe on Russian energy.  Anyone any ideas?
