Neutrality kept Switzerland out of fighting wars. Wars are immoral. Judges in order to do  their job right have to remain neutral. Parents should as well remain neutral. Staying neutral takes more bravery than taking sides. As an example, some countries and some people find homosexuality immoral. In those situations, it takes courage to take a neutral stand regarding homosexuals. Neutrality shows fearless and unconditional respect.Who is to say what is moral and what is not. And something regarded as morally correct at one time  can be regarded as immorally wrong at another time.

I think that all of us agree that the negative consequences of war far out weight any of the few positive consequences.
The positive consequences of war can be realized by other means, especially in the modern times that we live in.:
1. The advance of knowledge and technology can be realized by universities and government and private projects with monetary and merit rewards.
2. People can mix their cultures, knowledge and genes via tourism and exchange projects and the internet.
3. Protection against aggressors can be attempted by diplomacy and sanctions.
4. Over population can be reduced by education, family planing and contraception.
5. We can realize that the world has become a lot smaller and that the brotherhood of man has become a lot clearer. We all have a common enemy in that if nature is exploited further we are all threatened. If you love your enemies, then you will not have any.

Switzerland has a lot to teach the world in avoiding wars.
On a political level, the keys to this are neutrality and direct democracy.
On a personal level, the keys are respect, tolerance, appreciation of diversity,

Examples are:
If a part of a canton wants to separate, then accept that fact and let them separate like demonstrated by Jura a few years ago.
Small is beautiful concept.as demonstrated by semi autonomy of the cantons and the refusal to join Euro.

Very interesting question you pose Molly.
Of course it is very easy to see the many negative consequences to war, which seems to be a part of human nature. I like to believe that there is always 2 sides to everything - positive and negative. War with weapons and fighting with words have some common ground, like you suggest. Being an aggressor in a war and being a bully also share common ground.

The positive consequences of bullying that I can think of are:
1. It can make you stronger when you are bullied.
2. It shows you who your friends are who come to your aid if you are bullied.
3. It allows you to show your friendship by coming to the aid of your friends who are bullied.
4. It allows you to make friends by coming to the aid of strangers who are bullied.
5. You can learn from it so that you do not bully others yourself.

The positive consequences of war that I can think of are much more difficult to spot of course:
1. It advances knowledge and technology that can be useful in times of peace.
2. It allows people to mix their cultures, knowledge and genes.
3. It can protect your countrymen and family against aggressors.
4. Like natural disasters like floods. earthquakes, fires and epidemics,it can be used to counteract over population.
5. We can learn from it. If you love your enemies, like Jesus is claimed to have said, then you will not have any.

Re: Mind's Eye Re: Additive Manufacturing

The Commies never were that good at being commie Don.  There are some good arguments the US was and is much better at it.  Communism was only meant for the elite anyway, the 35,000 Greeks living on the backs of 400,000 slaves in Athens.  Hard to know what they used women for, other than breeding, though they let them out to attend funerals if they got past 60.

I reckon the quality of our lives would go up a lot with less work, less being screwed by bosses and (on a long list) some decent entertainment.  How long is it since the Boss was croaking '57 channels and nothing to watch'?  But if we slacken off the lies on work ethic and don't stay ahead on technology and military stuff, how long before we become terrorist-freedom-fighters against the Islamist plague?  In the past women converted quickly - we guys were slower, perhaps because we needed adult circumcision.  There are reasons for the F-35s.  But soon, because we gave the East manufacturing technologies, they will be up to speed.

Not sure we can talk any of this through under current formulas.

It will be just enough to keep us fed, clothed and housed with anything we get done on the black market or working for the government(whatever the New World Order calls government) as gravy and "extra." Us Westerners will necessarily need to drastically lower or standards of living to accommodate those less fortunate. Of course, those of us with political or family connections(same thing) will get "perks" and favors to help compensate for the loss of freedom to the masses. Ah, ain't Communism grand?

But I digress...

Not sure what really big means, but the biggest I've seen is probably at the Society of Manufacturing Engineers expo, about 6'x12'x12', the portable model used for shows. I'm sure the auto plants in the are have some in use already as the supplier companies attend at least a dozen various shows throughout the year, including the North American International Auto Show that puts almost a million people through the center in two weeks.

No, Craig is the weird fellow that started the group. I'm just the one who accepted the mantle when he left.

We go to war in a variety of ways, big to small. daily (some of us), in interpersonal ways, and over decades, as the human race. Why?

Mind's Eye Re: Sacrilegious Women

They already have female grunts in Denmark Don.  Couldn't give a rat's arse about the gender angles myself.  We get nearly all that stuff wrong anyway.  Like all thsat bleating about peace and love and ban the bomb from dorks with no idea what would happen if we slack off.  The creeps who look at someone smoking as though they are more evil than a society of beheading black-baggers.  Some liberalism is so stupid I can't beat it.

But I'd like news in newsrooms rather than gossip, flirting and propaganda.  No arguments can really start if we go on pretending economics is a science or like one somehow, and avoid the obvious power-play in place about staying ahead.  It's like imagining people will tell you the truth about the boss while she's standing there.  Most jobs are so bullshit now anyone could do them and we wouldn't notice if they stopped!

Re: Mind's Eye Re: Additive Manufacturing

TMNT was a b&w comic first Neil. Good art and excellent absurdist humor. As with a great deal of technology the 3-D printers will be eliminating jobs. That's life. That's ok though because soon enough we'll all be payed to vote.

Nah!  I'd rather take a flight to Schipol and cadge some strong espresso from Allan.  Have you seen any of the really big 3-D printers?  Some of them are printing with plasma metals.

There have been several events through the center this year focusing additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, that has become so exact that auto parts can be manufactured successfully with the technology: http://www.manufacturingglobal.com/technology/408/INDUSTRY-ANALYSIS:-The-pros-and-cons-of-3d-printing  The medical industry has even started making body parts:  http://markets.financialcontent.com/stocks/news/read?GUID=29487729

Not sure I would sign up for that, but what do you think? Game changer?
