Re: Mind's Eye Re: Look who's back in favor!

Fawkes was a traitor who fought with the Spanish in the low
countries. He claimed to want to blow the Scots back to their native
hills and he had a death list of prominent Scots - sadly he wasn't
around to deal with Blair and Brown. The Fawkes we remember is a
fictional version - Wikki has the details. He avoided his 'just
desserts' (the revolting hanging, drawing and quartering) by leaping
off the scaffold and breaking his own neck. Good movie though Don.

Slip and Gruff did do a thing called Capitalists for a while, but we
faded away.

I like the idea of politicians fading away Don, preferably quicker
than Fidel did! I'd go a bit further and have them have to work for a
living after office - and not via current revolving doors to the big
banks. Something like VSO
(Voluntary Service Overseas - board, lodging, small stipend) would do,
maybe canal cleaning or other environmental projects. Our best prime
minister (Harold Wilson) went quietly mad in the Scilly Islands - a
lovely bit of Britain off Cornwall.

The blowing stuff and people up cult is a disaster, whether 9/11 or
whatever is behind Arab Springs or WW3 in the Congo. I assume lack of
democracy is behind it - but nutters of the first water are always
involved. I suppose we just get on with the day job hoping it will
fizzle out. A group calling themselves post-autistic economists think
we'd do better to address the real issues. I guess the bombers think
something similar on their nihilistic path to the land of milk and
honey (I never understand the fixation with virgins).

I've just read a thing by Gertrude Himmelfarb (perhaps thinking this a
pseudonym of Gabby's) - magnificent gossip on Victorian values - she
couldn't resist telling us Havelock Ellis, married to a lesbian was
only aroused by urolagnia (also known as udinism) - concluding we have
telescopic morality to compliment political correctness much worse
than the Victorians and more to do with Big Brother than them. Much
discussion of morality amongst the Victorians was creative, rather
than of the dull, terrorist kind.
