Name List Marathon

Dear all

You may be interested to hear of an extensive project which we are
starting up along with the Province of West Flanders, the IFFMuseum
and the Friends Organisation of the Museum.

Within the framework of the Cultural Project GONE WEST 2014-2018 the
organisers are aiming to involve thousands of youngsters in a
'participation project conceived as an awareness-making instrument'.

The intention of the project consists in compiling a comprehensive
list of all military and civilian victims of the Great War who fell on
Belgian territory.

Meanwhile a substantial amount of work on this project has already
been implemented.

Along with the German Volksbund deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, a
constructive form of cooperation has been started to exchange data on
the German (military) victims.

Within the City of Ypres Museums two volunteers are scouring
Regimental Histories withg a view to completing victim numbers.

As for the CWGC, most of the work has already been completed. Only the
Commonwealth victims who got mortally injured and are commemorated in
France or the UK still need to be traced.

For the American casualties, an important source is a recent
publication entitled Flanders Field. The other, repatriated casualties
will be traced with the help of this source.

As far as the Belgian victims are concverned, an enthusiastic Museum
volunteer has been working on the composition and compilation of this
list for the last... 12 years.

A category of which the compilation will not really be an evident
matter is the one of the Belgian civilian victims. An inventory of all
local war monuments is in the making. Other sources that wil be
scrutinizerd are archives and diverse publications. Lots of schools
have promised to cooperate in the compilation of the lists that are
relevant to their communities.

With the participation of 3,500 pupils, around 900,000 name cards of
the French data base Mémoire des Hommes has been researched. As the
complete data base, however, contains over 1,350,000 name cards, this
means that another 450,000 still need to be researched.

In cooperation with the Province of West Flanders and 3 schools in
West Flanders, one of which is the Teacher Training College KATHO-RENO
(Torhout) a "Name List Marathon" will be organized, from Wednesday 28
to Thursday 29th of coming March, during which thousands of Franch
name cards will be scrutinized and inventorized.

Thought you might like to be informed of this project.

Best,

Chris
