Yes- the symbols still are. The art instructed prior to general
literacy- printing in the vernacular and so on. But that is
Christianity- and the use of Latin- while other religions vary from
totems to forbidding the human form/Islam. India wasn't shy- nor
Persia- nor the Pagans, in general.
Beyond religion, human societies use symbols/images to unite the
population, I suppose. But also for other reasons. It is rather
primitive- an immediate sort of judgement and recognition.
