The butterfly effect/perturbation theory. Make a small ripple (the
flapping of a butterfly's wings, for example) somewhere and a storm is
created at a distance from the perturbation. In just such a fashion,
all the events in the past have led up to your post and my reply and
the entire universe henceforth depends upon them. Every event in a
space-time continuum is vital because they all already exist within
the whole. This is basic Special Relativity although it is a
philosophical application that Einstein didn't want to get dragged
into. His personal response was the very short, "Free will is not
compatible with space-time." I strongly suspect that, as a physicist,
Einstein didn't want people to focus too much on the philosophical
implications of his theory as much as the physical implications; had
he been a philosopher, it might have been the other way around.
