Re: WWI art literature

Hello Stuart,

Many thanks, I will try to find Hynes´s book. Interesting that it covers literature and music, too. Even if the WWI English Poetry course gave us a good survey of the poetry, we didn´t do that much novel and short story writing or music.

(Stuart, please, on to something else: I have signed up for the Ancestral Voices online course this Michaelmas term. Does your lectures about Anglo-Saxon literature, the guided tour of the British Library, appear as course material? I have downloaded all your lectures on iTunes and have watched them more than once. As a native Swedish speaker, I see this course as a way of learning more about the Nordic languages, too.)

Best wishes

Elsa

Sam Hynes in The War Imagined looks at this a bit – it also covers literature and music though.

Subject: WWI art literature

Dear all,

During the WWI much poetry and literature was written, as we have seen. But much art, - painting, drawing, propaganda posters, and sculpture, etc - was created, too.

We studied some of it in The English Poetry of the First World War course.  But I would think that there is much literature about the WWI art written, too, literature written by art historians. I have tried to find useful titles, but not been very successful.

There are a number of web sites to explore, but is there any good and readable literature about the art of the WWI? There are some publishers specialising in art literature.

Would you know any titles that you could recommend me?

Best wishes

Elsa
